“HIV is not connected to death, its connected to life and that is what I am doing to the maximum.”
We at the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation would like to applaud former Wales professional rugby player Gareth Thomas on his decision to reveal his HIV status.
After being threatened with the disclosure of his status, Thomas announced that he is HIV positive in a video uploaded to his Twitter page. Despite the circumstances around the disclosure, Thomas says that is committed to fighting the stigma that continues to surround HIV/AIDS.
Following the announcement, Thomas completed the Iroman triathlon in Pembrokeshire, UK, finishing the gruelling challenge in just over 12 hours.
The DTHF congratulates Thomas for his courage in speaking out to reduce stigma, and for showing the world that those living with the virus can still fulfil their dreams.
