Mpho Kathleen Ndebele is a retired professional social worker. She has served on varied boards, including the Environmental Development Agency, the National Business Initiative, Black Sash, Impumelelo Innovations Awards, Brimstone Investments and Siphumelele Investments. She was also vice–chairperson of the Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority. She has served as Non-Executive Director of Brimstone Investment Corp. Ltd since 2006.
Well–known for her work in development and leadership, Ms Ndebele was the first Executive Director of the Social Change Assistance Trust (Scat), an independent fund–raising and grant–making development agency that seeks to partner with rural community agencies to improve the quality of life of these communities.
She has also served as the director of the Lesotho Planned Parenthood Association, Lesotho National Development Corporation, the Christian Council of Lesotho, the SA Children’s Books Forum and the Anglican Board of Education.
In 2010 Ms Ndebele was appointed the first lay-Canon in the Diocese of Cape Town and the first woman and lay person to be selected to the position of Chancellor of St. George’s Cathedral.
Ms Ndebele has strong ties to the University of Cape Town. Her husband was Vice-Chancellor from 2000–2008. She is a personal friend of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and is energetic and committed, with a great sense of fun.
Ms Ndebele holds the degrees of BA (Economics) and MSW (Social Planning – Denver, USA).
